Summer Pub Social

July 2025
A fun afternoon at our regular summer social spot, The Chesham Arms. Catching up on each others’ summer travels, activities and plans, and a few games of Cobra Paw!

Let’s just say that some of us were better at this game than others…

Barbican Writing Mornings

Spring 2025
Regular writing sessions at Barbican Centre for people in our community to sit down and focus on their respective writing projects – from short stories and novels, to poetry and life writing and blog articles.

Ready to get stuck in to the next quiet writing block

Christmas Book Swap

December 2024
Our annual White Elephant book swap. Always a crowd pleaser! Everyone taking part takes home at least one book. This year we weren’t quite as cut-throat with stealing previously opened ones though – last year had a lot more stealing, but everyone was still pretty happy with the book they ended up with.

New books!

Trip to the Theatre:
The Ocean at the End of the Lane

November 2023
A group of us went to see the stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Ocean At The End Of The Lane. The staging was amazing!

Our 5th Birthday

September 2023
Following the success of our a book-themed pub quiz to celebrate our first birthday in 2019, we organised another pub quiz event to raise money for the Literacy Pirates, an excellent local charity who provide an after-school programme to improve the reading, writing, confidence and perseverance of children who might be at risk of falling behind at school. The book-themed quiz and other fundraising activities on the night helped us beat our fundraising total from the previous event, and donate hundreds of pounds to the Pirates.

2023 Summer Social

July 2023
What a wet summer we’ve been having! No change there though… we’ve tried to organise a summer picnic for 3 years in a row now, and each year it gets rained off. The tradition continued this year, so we gathered at The Chesham Arms for a few pints and pizzas while the heavens opened outside. 🌧

When the terrace roof starts leaking because the rain is so heavy…

Book Launch: Wild Atlantic Women

May 2023
Members of the book club went along to a special event at Burley Fisher Books to help launch Grainne Lyons’s book Wild Atlantic Women: Walking Ireland’s West Coast.

A good turnout to hear Grainne talking about the book and doing a few readings

Trip to the Theatre:
Drive Your Plow @ The Barbican

March 2023
A group of us booked to go and see the stage adaptation of Olga Tokarczuk’s amazing novel Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead (one of our highlights from our backlist of meetings). What a show!

Great view, even from up in the cheap seats!

Rough Trade Books Presents…
An Evening Curated by
4 Brown Girls Who Write

February 2022
Some of our members attended an evening of readings curated by 4 Brown Girls Who Write (Roshni Goyate, Sharan Hunjan, Sheena Patel and Sunnah Khan) and Rough Trade Books. The event featured a panel discussion and readings by the collective of four poets, as well as two special guests: poet and author Mona Arshi and choreo-poet Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa.

Literacy Pirates
Volunteers’ Christmas Party

December 2019
Following our successful 1st birthday event where we raised money for the local charity the Literacy Pirates, we were invited to organise another book-themed quiz especially for the Christmas social for the Literacy Pirates’ volunteers.

Our 1st Birthday

September 2019
We celebrated our first birthday by running a book-themed pub quiz with book club members and their close friends. At the same time, we took the opportunity to raise money for an excellent local charity: the Literacy Pirates, who provide an after-school programme to improve the reading, writing, confidence and perseverance of children who are less advantaged and falling behind at school.

Entry money for the quiz was donated to the Pirates in full, and we also had other fundraising activities on the night – like the book raffle/tombola, which had all attendees excited to expand their book collections!

Book Benefit For The Homeless

March 2019
We attended the Book Benefit for the Homeless, organised by local publisher Influx Press and local book shop Burley Fisher Books. The event included multiple readings from authors and a book sale with donations from publishers. Proceeds from the night went to North London Action for the Homeless.
